What’s in the Name

Our school is named for the third Lubavitcher Rebbe, called the Tzemach Tzedek after his great work by this name. In his sefer, Tzemach Tzedek, he dissects the intricacies of the Talmud. While he is not the first great sage to be called the same name as his magnum opus, there is an additional dimension to this name, as explained by the current Rebbe.

The name Tzemach Tzedek shares the same gematria, numerical value as Menachem Mendel, his birth name. Thus, the names are equal in a sense. Nevertheless, the choosing of Tzemach Tzedek over Menachem Mendel is deliberate, as the name is uniquely connected to Moshiach.

The name Tzemach is used by the Navi Zecharia, who said “Behold, I will bring my servant Tzemach.”

The name Tzedek is connected to Moshiach, who is known as Moshiach Tzidkeinu, our righteous Moshiach.

The connection of his name to Moshiach is especially appropriate in light of the Tzemach Tzedek’s personal work to create an environment in which Chassidim and non-Chassidim were more comfortable with each other, easing the tensions of previous generations. It was with this intent that Chassidim chose to refer to him by this name- indicating a connection to, and yearning for Moshiach, as intensified by the unity of the Jewish nation.

In this vein, we present our school as one which promotes and embodies unity among Jews, open and welcoming to all, and hastening the arrival of Moshiach.
